These include boost, effective, essential, increase, offer, and provide. We know Stephen King\u2019s book \u201cOn Writing: A Memoir of the Craft\u201d advised aspiring writers to throw away their thesaurus and use the first words that come to mind, but the original came out in 2000, and the 10th anniversary version came out in 2010 \u2013 years before content writing took off. Surely, such repetition aggravates King\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2013\/03\/13\/stephen-king-on-adverbs\/\">as much as adverbs<\/a>\u00a0when he shops online for products and services. To prevent content writers from being killed in his next novel, short story, or screenplay, consider buying a writer\u2019s thesaurus. Just use it wisely.<\/p>\n<h2>How Content Writers and Editors Should Not Use a Thesaurus<\/h2>\n<p>Googling \u201c[word] definition\u201d will help you replace words you\u2019d rather not repeat; however, a lot of content writers and editors choose the first synonym they see \u2013 or worse, a word which only sounds intellectual. Writer Jennifer Blanchard admitted to this on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailywritingtips.com\/hint-to-writers-use-the-thesaurus-with-caution\/\">Daily Writing Tips<\/a>\u00a0blog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically when I sat down for a writing session, I would write without stopping until I was done,\u201d she said. \u201cThen I\u2019d go back and edit my piece for typos, misspellings, etc. Once I was finished with all that, I would grab my thesaurus and go through the piece I had just written, changing common words to words I thought were better and made me sound \u2018smarter.\u2019 (See everyone! I know how to use big words!)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModern English Usage\u201d author H.W. Fowler and \u201cHow to Not Write Bad: The Most Common Writing Problems and the Best Ways to Avoid Them\u201d author Ben Yagoda called these words \u201celegant variations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Fowler\u2019s view, and mine,\u201d he said, \u201celegant variation is not a good thing. Your efforts to avoid repetition are too clumsy and obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Often, you don\u2019t even need an alternative. For example, he told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writersdigest.com\/online-editor\/5-ways-to-deal-with-word-repetition\">Writer\u2019s Digest<\/a>, instead of writing, \u201cHartnell read the newspaper. When he was finished with the periodical, he got up and went outside,\u201d you could leave it at, \u201cHartnell read the newspaper. When he was finished, he got up and went outside.\u201d No one uses the word periodical, so you shouldn\u2019t either. In fact, that\u2019s the best use of Google definitions. If you click \u201cTranslations, word origins, and more definitions\u201d beneath the word \u201cperiodical\u201d and click on the \u201cuse over time\u201d chart, you\u2019ll find that the word has been rendered archaic \u2013 i.e., obsolete, old-fashioned, extinct.<\/p>\n<h2>The Difference Between a Thesaurus and a Writer\u2019s Thesaurus<\/h2>\n<p>Whereas a thesaurus hands you a list of synonyms, a writer\u2019s thesaurus tells you how to use a word properly. If its advice is heeded, it also eliminates pretentiousness and fluff.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a lot of content writers use the word \u201cutilize\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a puff word,\u201d says novelist, short story writer, essayist, and English and creative writing professor David Foster Wallace (Oxford American Writer\u2019s Thesaurus). \u201cSince it does nothing that good old &#8216;use&#8217; doesn&#8217;t do, its extra letters and syllables don&#8217;t make a writer seem smarter. Rather, using &#8216;utilize&#8217; makes you seem like either a pompous twit or someone so insecure that he&#8217;ll use pointlessly big words in an attempt to look smart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other contributing editors, including Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post critic Michael Dirda, tell writers how to \u2013 and how not to \u2013 use words from aghast to xylophone. If you think you\u2019re using \u201clike\u201d, \u201csaid\u201d, and \u201cvery\u201d correctly, you\u2019re probably mistaken.<\/p>\n<p>Dig deeper and you\u2019ll find notes on commonly confused words and word spectrums that \u201cshow shades of meaning from a word to its opposite.\u201d For instance, most women would rather be called beautiful than pretty. In the Oxford American Writer\u2019s Thesaurus, a vertical chart reveals that pretty falls nearly 30 slots below beautiful.
